No sound?
Can’t hear anything when you hit play in Strum Machine? Let’s fix that.
(If you can hear audio but it doesn’t sound good, please see the Distorted sound help article.)
When the sound isn’t working in Strum Machine, the first thing to do, after ensuring that the instruments aren’t muted in the volume mixer, is to go to another website (like YouTube) and ensure that audio is working there.
If you can hear audio from other websites but not from Strum Machine, we recommend that you restart your device. Yes, it’s a cliché, but it really does fix this issue almost every time! And thankfully you’re unlikely to need to do it more than once.
If you can’t hear audio from other websites either, be sure to check your volume settings, your speaker connection (if applicable), etc. Restarting your device may still be helpful in this case.
If you tried restarting your device and it still doesn’t work, please write to us! (And let us know you’ve already restarted your device, since that’s often the first thing we suggest.)
For iPhones and iPads in particular
If you’re using Strum Machine in your iPhone/iPad web browser and “Silent Mode” is enabled (crossed-out bell icon in the Control Center, or mute switch on older iPhones) then Strum Machine will be unable to play audio. This is one of the reasons we recommend using the mobile app on iOS devices, which isn’t affected in this way.
If you want to use Strum Machine in the browser instead of the mobile app for some reason, here’s how to get audio working again:
-
iPads and newer iPhones: Swipe down on the top-right corner of your screen to show the iPad’s control center, and ensure that Silent Mode is disabled – the bell icon should not be crossed out.
-
Older iPhones: Check that the mute switch on the side of the phone is not set to mute the ringer.
